What to do after a car accident in New Brunswick

Injuries from a collision, especially whiplash, can take hours or days to show up. These steps protect both your health and your claim.

Move to a safe place if you can, call 911 if anyone is hurt, and report the collision to police.

1

Get safe and report the collision.

Go to an emergency department or see a doctor right away if you have severe pain, numbness, confusion, a worsening headache or any loss of consciousness. Soreness that lingers or grows over the next few days should be assessed too.

Get checked.

2

Tell your own insurer promptly.

3

Your standard policy asks for written notice of claim within 30 days of the accident, or as soon as practicable, so do not wait to see whether symptoms settle.

Write down your claim number, your adjuster's name and contact details, the date of the accident and each appointment.

Keep your records.

4

Chiropractors and physiotherapists are primary health care providers, so you can book at Station Street Health without a doctor's referral. For accident benefits, the standard policy says treatment by a health professional must be prescribed by a physician, so ask your doctor for a prescription and confirm with your adjuster.

Book an assessment.

5

Follow your plan.

6

Attend your appointments and report new symptoms so your records show how you are recovering.

Five kinds of care, one coordinated plan

After a collision, one type of care rarely covers everything. Our practitioners work closely together and, with your consent, share what they learn so your plan changes as you recover. We commonly see whiplash, neck and upper back pain, low back pain, shoulder and seat-belt-related soft tissue injuries, sprains and strains, and headaches linked to neck injury.

Our chiropractors assess your spine and joints, explain what they find and build a plan around it. Care may include spinal manipulation, soft tissue therapy, rehabilitation exercises and other options where appropriate.

Our physiotherapists use hands-on treatment and progressive exercise to restore movement and strength after sprains, strains, whiplash and joint injuries, and help you return to the activities you care about.

An accident can leave you anxious, sleeping poorly, nervous about driving or feeling low, even when physical injuries are minor. Counselling therapy gives you a confidential space to work through it.

Registered massage therapists work on the muscle tension, guarding and stiffness that often follow a collision, as part of your wider recovery plan.

Our occupational therapists help when injuries limit work or daily life, with return-to-work planning, activity pacing and practical strategies for everyday tasks.

How accident benefits and billing work

This page is general information, not legal or insurance advice. Your coverage depends on your policy and your insurer's decisions.

In New Brunswick, every standard auto insurance policy includes accident benefits, often called Section B*. They are no-fault, so your own insurer pays them even if you caused the collision. Accident benefits cover medical and rehabilitation expenses, loss of income, and funeral and death benefits. For medical and rehabilitation care, the standard policy sets a limit of $50,000 and covers expenses within four years of the accident, whichever comes first. Your insurer decides which treatments are approved under your claim. Treatment by a health professional must be prescribed by a physician, and the policy asks for proof of claim within 90 days of the accident, or as soon as practicable.

We direct bill most insurance companies. Bring your claim number and your adjuster's contact details when you book so our team can set up billing. With your consent, we can also communicate with your adjuster and, if you have one, your lawyer.
