What are orthotics?

A custom orthotic is a device designed to position the foot and ankle into the most anatomically efficient position. They look like insoles, but are biomechanical medical appliances that are custom made to maintain a neutral position of your foot, ankle, knees and hips. Custom orthotics work on your feet much like glasses work on your eyes - they reduce stress and strain on your body by bringing your feet back into proper positioning. The plastic body of the custom orthotic helps to position the foot by redirecting and reducing certain motion that takes place during the gait cycle. Custom orthotics fit into your shoes as comfortably as an insole - and they have the advantage of having been made from precise imprints of your feet.

The process

At Station Street Health our chiropractors will perform a thorough history, physical and biomechanical assessment (including gait analysis) of the foot, ankle and lower extremity to evaluate whether or not you are a candidate for custom orthotics.

If custom orthotics are deemed to be of benefit, our clinicians will then perform a 3D foam imprint of your foot and arch to gain the blueprint of your custom orthotic. Further enhancements are added to the custom orthotic if clinically necessary.

After casting you can expect your custom orthotics to arrive within the month! The cost is $400 + HST.
